Steven B Demarco

My Story

Steven DeMarco was born in Chicago, IL, and raised in Evanston, IL for most of his youth. He started drawing at the age of six years old. Always looking through is mothers box of paperback books which were Gothic Romance and ghost stories. Looking at the beautifully painted cover that graced every cover. He then started his life long journey of becoming an artist and cover illustrator and has not stopped since.

During Steven's early years, he would purchase and look at Warren Magazine's Creepy, Eerie and Vampirella along with Famous Monsters of Filmland. Steven sited that when Disney's Fantasia, Snow White, and Pinocchio came on, he was more interested in looking at the background paintings that the animated cells which influenced for him to push dramatic colors in each of his paintings.

Every Saturday night at 10:30pm CT, Steve never missed his favorite snow Creature Features. Loving these old black and white movies which lacked color but showed dark shadows that created the atmosphere and set the mood.

In early September of 1978, Steven made up his mind of starting to pursue his life long adventure. He and his friend went to the local Goods of Evanston Art Store and he purchased for Steven 2 11x17 canvases along with 1 tube of titanium white and ivory black and a few brushes. He then said, "go and paint and paint and paint until your hands fall off." Steven obviously took his advice.

In September of 1981, Steven attended the American Academy of Art in Chicago with a degree in Commercial Art and Illustration. In spite of going to college during these years, 1981-1984, he worked part time as a picture frame fitter at the Goods in Evanston, helping to pay his way through through school until he graduated. He then worked in the advertising industries for the next 4 years working on cigarette comps for Leo Burnett and so on.

From 1984-1991, Steven wanted to get out of the advertising business because of the long hours and the stressful environment. He wanted enough energy to work on his paintings as he came home from a long day.

From 1991-2011, Steve worked many different types of jobs even worked as a laborer building town homes for the military at the local Navel Airbase. He then returned to working as an Editorial Manager at one of the biggest home building publishers called Modern Home Builders in which he loves to do for his livelihood. When he comes home, being in his fifties, he works on paintings pushing himself and honing his skills.

Steven's cover art in the early to mid 1990's graced the comic book covers of "Splatter Magazine" and back cover of "Slash Magazine." and illustrated a comic book by Thorby Comics "Death Asylum." He also produced a beautiful full cover spot for TSR's Amazing Stories back in 1991 which he was so proud of.

Steven in 2010 was commissioned by Bigfoot Times publisher Daniel Perez and Illustrated a whole book that consisted of 29-30 Illustrations including the cover. The hard cover all sold out and is now being sold in E-book format on Amazon books titled: Bigfoot: Encounters Past and Present.

Steven still expresses that his goal is still to achieve and to become an artist known for many Genres such as paleontology, horror, fantasy, fairy tales and children's. To this day, he still puts in hard work and effort in each painting he does in order to still achieve his life long goal.....to be an artist of many genre.
